Why another FTP Client?
Why would any sane person make another FTP client for Windows? There are lots and lots of FTP clients available, and it sometimes looks like every neewbie Winsock programmer has to add another (or at least try to) to the list.
The War FTP Client is the first full-featured freeware FTP client for Windows95/NT. Unlike the competition, there are no commercial intentions behind the release of this client. The program is targeted to handle experienced and advanced FTP users, - as well as newcomers to the Internet that want something better than the FTP clients in the WEB browsers.
Features
- Multiple Document Interface (MDI) allows unlimited open sessions to FTP servers from the same program.
- All standard FTP commands, including REST (resume broken transfers).
- Async network and overlapped disk IO allows simultaneous network and disk access on the same transfer.
- Powered by the FTP engine from the awarded War FTP Daemon - probarbly the technically most advanced FTP engine ever written for Windows!
- Both graphical windows interface (GUI) and optionally a traditional FTP command interpereter for advanced use. This dual interface allowas you to click & drag to do trivial tasks, and enter powerful FTP commands or SITE commands without any delaying pop-up boxes.
Features to be implemented in the near future
- Recursive download of whole sites
- Server to server transfer
- Site manager as an option to the file-by-file storage used today
- HTTP interface handled as file-transfers - for up/download of entire WEB sites without the need for FTP.
- POP3/SMTP interface handled as file-transfers - just for the fun of it...
- Scripting capabilities for scheduled tasks.
- A number of special features when used against a War FTP daemon.

Known bugs and problems
The War FTP Client is released in early BETA. That means that not all features has been implemented, and that not everything is tested out yet.
Not yet implemented:
- Download of whole directories
- Recursive download
- Download with patterns ("MGET *.txt")
Bugs
- Uncommon FTP servers are not supported at this time. If you experience problems with a FTP server, please send an email to jgaa@mail.jgaa.com with the IP name of the server so that the server can be supported in later versions.
- Some minor bugs in the GUI
- The status window is not updated correctly (remains blank) before it is scrolled first time
- The scroll-bar in the status/log window does not work correctly with NT4 when the text groes large (37636 pixels y axis). (Limitation in Windows).
- Not all of the options for the log works as supposed.
- Auto-tracking of panes does not work correctly for the two upper panes.
Support
The War FTP Client is released as freeware. That means that you don't need to register or pay for the software. It also means that no support staff is standing by to help you out... A commercial support service is being negotiated right now, but there are some free support alternatives available.
The alt.comp.jgaa newsgroup is open for any questions you might have :-)
